New Year's Eve

Published on
I spent last night hanging out at Bob and Candice’s house. It was a good party, and I had a lot of fun ringing in the New Year. Normally I call a pile of people at midnight and wish them happy New Years, but for some reason my cell phone stopped working last night. Last Couple of Days

Published on
Well, the relaxing period is nearly over. In just a few days, 2006 will be over, and 2007 will ring in with the first work day in over a week for me. I’ve spent the last few days taking it relatively easy. On Thursday night I went out with Hesty and Neil down to some places in Yaletown. We hit Elixir, and then made a brief stop at Bar None for a few drinks. I’m definitely getting too old for that place. Hesty, struggling to contain his enthusiasm Last night, I went down to Harv’s house for a house party. I was expecting only a few people to be there, but I think there was close to 25 or ...

Clay tagged me the other day, which means I need to state five things about me that nobody really knows. So here goes. I had a job at K-Mart when I was 17. I’m not sure if my manager didn’t like me, or if some cosmic power was punishing me, but I spent most of my shifts in ladies-wear folding all the panties in the bulk bins. And it’s not like they were some hot thongs or brazillian panties — these were those eggshell-white granny panties. I still wake up screaming in the night thinking of those shifts. I was a bit pudgy in Ottawa years ago. And by pudgy, I mean sort of chunky. After ...

The Start of a New Year

Published on
Well, it’s nearly that time again — in less than 24 hours, 2006 will dissolve forever, and 2007 will be before us. It’s been a strange and challenging year for most people I know, myself included. I started the year with this incredible desire to travel, and ended the year feeling the need to hover closer to home. I saw quite a bit more of the world this year, and managed to visit San Francisco, San Jose, the Monterey Coast, Tokyo, Boston, New York City, Toronto, Calgary, the Rocky Mountains, and nearly made it to Huatulco, Mexico. That’s not bad for a guy who really hates to step onto ...

Merry Christmas Everyone

Published on
Hey everyone, I just wanted to wish you all a very Merry Christmas! I’m in Chilliwack for a few days enjoying some R & R with my family. I got about twelve hours of sleep last night, plus around 3 or 4 during the day on my dad’s couch this afternoon in front of his new 46″ 1080p TV. I’m at my sister’s tonight hanging out with some relatives. A present to me from my dad Update — well, it’s officially Christmas now so Merry Christmas. Time sure is flying. It’s already Monday, and it seems like I just started relaxing. I’ve gotten tons of sleep so far, which is really good. ...

'Tis the season to be jolly

Published on
Friday night I took some time out for a few beers with Derek and Cisco. We started down at Malone’s on Seymour and Pender, made our way down to the Yaletown Brew Pub momentarily (only to realize it was packed), hit Elixir at the Opus Hotel for a few bottles of wine, and finally ended up down at the Caprice for a while. I find it rather unfortunate that it’s next to impossible lately to go anywhere for beers on a Friday evening and actually get in. In fact, my last couple attempts for an after work beer have always involved a lot of pub-hunting, even to find two seats available. If you compare ...

Big News In Medicine — Possible Diabetes Cure?

Published on
I was coming into work this morning, and I read this on the front page of the Vancouver Sun. This is pretty big news in the medical community. Apparently some researchers at UofT have found a way to reverse diabetes in Type 1 diabetic mice. This is exciting because it was always thought that type I diabetic people lost the ability to produce insulin because their own immune system completely destroyed the beta cells in the pancreas. However, the beta cells in these mice became active again once they had an injection. Here’s the original article. Also surprising is that this approach also seems ...

Can you really be this dumb?

Published on
I found something a little more dumb than me making perogies the other night. Here’s a recent quote by Lindsay Lohan: Lindsay Lohan says she’s been going to Alcoholics Anonymous meetings for a year, but hasn’t talked about it because “it’s no one’s business.” “I just left an AA meeting,” the 20-year-old actress tells People magazine in a story posted Tuesday on its Web site. “I haven’t had a drink in seven days. Or anything,” she says. “I’m not even legal to, so why would I? I don’t drink when I go to clubs. I drink with my friends at home, but there’s no need ...

The Great Perogy Battle

Published on
Tonight I had the stupid idea that I would come home from work and make a huge batch of perogies. Normally, I don’t attempt anything that dumb — at least not while sober — but with a big potlock coming up this weekend, I really need something to bring. Since I know my friends all like my grandma’s perogies, I decided to attempt that. Perogies So, I realize I’m not my grandma, and there’s no possible way I could put as much love and ukranian charm into my perogies as she does hers, but I thought I would take a stab at it. I’ve done this a few times, but at most I make perogies once ...

Nuclear Weapons

Published on
Tonight I spent some time in front of the TV, in some nice flannel pants (oh yeah), surfing the web, looking up random events. To that end, I really love wikipedia. I can so easily lose myself in that maze of knowledge, and find I can really learn a pile of new things just by spending an hour or two a week surfing through a pile of links. Tonight I ended up going through the history of warfare, in particular, related to nuclear weapons. And I guess it kind of interested me, because technically I am a physicist (my undergrad was in Engineering Physics, and I took a few courses related to nuclear ...

Party

Published on
So, despite having been at my place now for nearly a year and a half, I never had the opportunity to have a bunch of people over for a party. Last night seemed like as good a time as any, so I invited a small group of people over for some beer, wine and of course, nachos. It was alot of fun, so thanks to everyone who came and helped drink. I’m still sort of amazed that there were more beer bottles here than there were boxes to put them in, which means some of you hardcores brought beer in a bag or something crazy like that. Me telling some weird joke that apparently involves my hand Some of ...

Sad Story

I read this a few minutes ago. I can only imagine the courage a father must have to sit in a car for nine days with his family, and then venture out alone in the cold snowy wilderness to find help. He made it eight miles on his own, even though search guys could hardly cover any ground themselves in those conditions. “It seems superhuman to me that he was able to cover that amount of distance given what he had and also that he had nine days in the car” before setting out, Josephine County Undersheriff Brian Anderson said. “I’m amazed,” searcher Robert Graham told reporters. “We spent ...

Trans Fat Banned

Published on
I read about this when I woke up: Trans Fat Banned in NYC. I think that’s pretty interesting actually. It opens up a lot of research opportunities since as far as I know it’s the only place that’s banned trans fat to such a large degree. I’m not sure I entirely agree with it though. I think most people know trans fat is bad, so I think putting it on the menu is good enough. Trans fat basically came about because the FDA thought it was super healthy years ago, and made everyone switch from animal/vegetable fats to trans fats. So, everyone, including my family, went out and switched from ...

24, Season Five

So, on Tuesday, December 5th, 24 Season Five comes out on DVD. I lost a few weeks to my life to the first four seasons, and plan to lose another week to this new season the moment it comes out. I’m pretty excited about it since it’s supposed to be a pretty wicked season. Hopefully they still have a few copies left at Future Shop when I get off of work on Tuesday. ...

Christmas

Published on
I’m such a big fan of Christmas. I don’t know why, since most people tend to get a little grumpier, the malls are way busier, traffic is far more hectic — yet somehow I always tend to get a little happier when my lights are up, or when I see presents under the tree. Lights up at my place The last couple Christmas’s have all sort of slipped past me without me really noticing. I guess I was just really busy, but I always found myself in Chilliwack a day or two before Christmas, wondering where in the world December went, and how was it that I didn’t remember it. So, today I went out and ...

Superman II – The Richard Donner Cut

Published on
For those of you who read my blog from time to time, you might remember my write up when I saw Superman Returns in the summer. It was actually not that bad of a movie (my second viewing I didn’t think it was as good), and when I got home that weekend, I decided to watch Superman I and II again just to remember what they were like. And I have to say, I really enjoyed them (even though Chris says that makes me gay). I was surfing the internet about a year ago, and read about the Richard Donner cut of Superman II. Apparently the original director of Superman I and II was a guy named Richard Donner. ...
