So, this is a fairly basic question. Lately, some people have been installing little rick roll blockers, thinking that it somehow protects them from being rick rolled simply because the video no longer plays. My take on that is that it’s basically a form of cheating, and that if you clicked the link, you were rick rolled.
But let’s see what my knowledgeable readers have to say. Chime in below:

I am SO not a geek that I get Rick-Rolled all the time
If that was the case (having to click the link), nobody would ever click anything you or I ever link again.
Haha! But if that was true, you wouldn’t need preview, or a blog entry describing how to use it! Muhahah!
And here I was, thinking that clicking the “Vote” button would actually load the Rick video….
Pffft It’s all about the Rico Roll now people. Although I agree it is about BAM! getting hit the the music playing - but it’s also about the pure trickery and redirection… I’m torn.
My daughter loaded up my mp3 player for me, and eventually Rick showed up and sang.
So yeah, any instance of Rick is an official Roll.
i think the distinction is simple:
you clicked = you got ricked
I Rick-Roll myself sometimes. Yes, I am currently seeking treatment for that…
If the target doesn’t hear the music, it’s a failed rickroll and they beat you.
